DEFINITION/OVERVIEW


Pododermatitis: descriptive term for dermatoses affecting the pedal region; not a final


diagnosis.


Claw Anatomy


 Ungual fold: crescent-shaped tissue that surrounds the proximal claw.


 Coronary band and dorsal ridge (dorsal surface of the ungual crest): produce most of


the claw; contribute to curvature of the claw.


Claw Terminology


 Onychopathy: disease of claws.


 Paronychia: inflammation of soft tissue around the claw.


 Pachyonychia: thickening of the claw.


 Onychitis: inflammation of the claw (all inclusive).


 Pyonychia: purulent exudates from the claw.


 Onychomycosis: fungal infection of the claw.


 Onychorrhexis: brittle claws that tend to split or break.


 Onychoschizia: splitting and/or lamination of the claw, usually beginning distally.


 Onychomadesis: sloughing of the claws.


 Onychodystrophy: deformity caused by abnormal growth.


 Onychomalacia: softening of the claws.


 Onychoclasis: breaking of the claw.


 Onychocryptosis: ingrown claw.


 Anonychia: absence of claws.


 Brachyonychia: shortened claws.


 Leukonychia: claw whitening.


 Macronychia: unusually large claws.


 Micronychia: unusually small claws.


 Onychalgia: claw pain.


 Onychatrophia: atrophy of claws.


 Onychauxis: hypertrophy of claws.
