Atropine (many genericbrands)


Anticholinergic agent(blocks acetylcholineeffect at muscarinicreceptor),parasympatholytic. Usedprimarily as adjunct toanesthesia or otherprocedures to increaseheart rate and decreaserespiratory andgastrointestinal secretion.Also used as antidote fororganophosphateintoxication.


Potent anticholinergicagent. Do not use inpatients with glaucoma,intestinal ileus,gastroparesis, ortachycardia. Side effectsof therapy includexerostomia, ileus,constipation, tachycardia,urine retention.


Used ordinarily as adjunctwith anesthesia or otherprocedures. Do not mixwith alkaline solutions.

0.02–0.04 mg/kg q6–8hIV, IM, SC; 0.2–0.5 mg/kg(as needed) fororganophosphate andcarbamate toxicosis.


Auranofin(triethylphosphinegold) (Ridaura)

Used for gold therapy(chrysotherapy).Mechanism of action isunknown, but may relateto immunosuppressiveeffect on lymphocytes.Used primarily forimmune-mediateddiseases.

Adverse effects includedermatitis, nephrotoxicity,and blood dyscrasias.

Use of this drug has notbeen evaluated inveterinary medicine. Nocontrolled clinical trials areavailable to determineefficacy in animals. It hasbeen suggested that thisproduct (oral) is not aseffective as injectableproducts, such asaurothioglucose.

3 mg capsules.

0.1–0.2 mg/kg q12h po.
