Famcyclovir
Antiviral drug. Syntheticpurine analogue (acyclicnucleoside analogue).Converted to penciclovirvia deacetylation andoxidation. Used to treatfeline herpesvirusinfection.
Possible adverse effects:mild anemia, mildincrease in WBC.
Response can be variablein some cats.
125, 250, and500 mg tablets.
Cat: feline herpes:62.5 mg/cat q8h po for3 weeks. Higher dose of125 mg/cat may be moreeffective. Kittens:30–50 mg/kg q12h po.
Famotidine (Pepcid)
Histamine H2 receptorantagonist. Used tosuppress acid secretion fortreatment and preventionof ulcers.
None reported foranimals.
Clinical studies forfamotidine have not beenperformed, thereforeoptimal dose for ulcerprevention and healing isnot known.
10 mg tablet;10 mg/mL injection.
Dog: 0.1–0.2 mg/kg po,IV, SC, IM q12h.Cat: 0.2–0.25 mg/kg IM,IV, SC, po q12–24h.
Fentanyl citrate(Sublimaze, generic)
Synthetic opiate analgesic.Approximately 80–100times more potent thanmorphine.
Adverse effects similar tomorphine.
Doses are based onempiricism andexperimental studies. Noclinical studies have beenreported. In addition tofentanyl injection,transdermal fentanyl isavailable (see below).
250 mg/5 mLinjection.
Anesthetic use:0.02–0.04 mg/kg IV q2hIM SC or 0.01 mg/kg IV,IM, SC (withacetylpromazine ordiazepam). Analgesia:dog: 0.002–0.01 mg/kg,cat: 0.001–0.005 mg/kgq2h IV, IM, SC.
