Meclizine (Antivert,generic)


Antiemetic and antihistamine.Used for treatment of motionsickness. Action may becaused by centralanticholinergic actions. Alsomay suppress chemoreceptortrigger zone (CRTZ).


Adverse effects have notbeen reported in animals.Anticholinergic(atropine-like) effects maycause side effects.


Results of clinical studiesin animals have not beenreported. Use in animals isbasedonexperienceinpeople or anecdotalexperiences in animals.


12.5, 25, 50 mgtablets.


Dog: 25 mg q24h po (formotion sickness,administer 1h prior totraveling).Cat: 12.5 mg q24h po.


Meclofenamatesodium (Arquel,Meclofen)

NSAID. Used for treatment ofarthritis and otherinflammatory disorders.

Adverse effects have notbeen reported in animals,but adverse effectscommon to other NSAIDsare possible.

Results of clinical studiesin animals have not beenreported. Use in animals isbasedonexperienceinpeople or anecdotalexperiences in animals.Administer with food.

50, 100 mgcapsules.Formulations fordogs are rarelyavailable now.

Dog: 1 mg/kg po q24h forup to 5 days.Cat: not recommended.

Medetomidine(Domitor)

α^2

-Adrenergic agonist. Used
primarily as sedative,anesthetic adjunct, andanalgesia.

α^2

-Agonists decrease
sympathetic output.Cardiovascular depressionmay occur. Medetomidinewill cause an initialbradycardia andhypertension.

May be used for sedation,analgesia, and minorsurgical procedures.Should be reversed withequal volume ofatipamezole.

Medroxyprogesteroneacetate(Depo-Provera[injection]; Provera[tablets])

Progestin hormone. Derivativeof acetoxyprogesterone. Inanimals, used as progesteronehormone treatment to controlestrus cycle. Also used formanagement of somebehavioral and dermatologicdisorders (such as urinespraying in cats and alopecia).

Adverse effects includepolyphagia, polydipsia,adrenal suppression (cat),increased risk of diabetes,pyometra, diarrhea, andincreased risk ofneoplasia.

Clinical studies in animalshave studied primarily thereproductive use andeffects on behavioral use.Medroxyprogesteroneacetate may have fewerside effects thanmegestrol acetate.

150, 400 mg/mLsuspensioninjection; 2.5, 5,10 mg tablets.

1.1–2.2 mg/kg q7d IM.For behavioral use,10–20 mg/kg is injectedSC. For prostatic diseasein dogs, use 3–5 mg/kgIM, SC.
