Mepivacaine(Carbocaine-V)
Local anesthetic of theamide class. Mediumpotency and duration ofaction, compared tobupivacaine. Compared tolidocaine, longer acting,but equal potency.
Mepivacaine may causeless irritation to tissuesthan lidocaine.
For epidural use, do notexceed 8 mg/kg totaldose. Duration of epiduralis 2.5–3h.
2% (20 mg/mL)injection.
Variable dose for localinfiltration. For epidural,0.5 mL of 2% solutionevery 30 sec until reflexesare absent.
6-Mercaptopurine(Purinethol)
Anticancer agent.Antimetabolite agent thatinhibits synthesis ofpurines in cancer cells.
Many side effects arepossible that are commonto anticancer therapy(many of which areunavoidable), includingbone marrow suppressionand anemia. Do not use incats.
Used for various forms ofcancer, including leukemiaand lymphoma. Consultspecific anticancerprotocol for specificregimen.
50 mg tablets.
Dog: 50 mg/m2 q24h po.Cat: do not use.
Meropenem (MerremIV)
Broad-spectrumcarbapenem antibiotic;indicated primarily forresistant infections causedby bacteria resistant toother drugs. Bactericidal.More active thanimipenem and ertapenem.
Risks similar to those ofother
β-lactam antibiotics.
Meropenem does notcause seizures asfrequently as imipenem.SC injections may causeslight hair loss at injectionsite.
Dosage guidelines havebeen extrapolated frompharmacokinetic studiesin animals and not testedfor efficacy in animals.Meropenem is moresoluble than imipenemand can be injected viabolus rather thanadministered in fluidsolutions.
