Silymarin (Silybin,Marin, “milk thistle”)

Contains silybin as themost active ingredient. Itis also known as milkthistle, from which it isderived. Silymarin is amixture of antihepatotoxicflavonolignans (derivedfrom the plant

Silybum

).


No adverse reactions havebeen reported.

Silymarin is available inseveral dietarysupplements. There maybe variable content andabsorption amongproducts.

Silymarin tablets arewidely availableOTC. Commercialveterinaryformulations (Marin)also contain zincand vitamin E in aphosphatidylcholinecomplex in tabletsfor dogs and cats.

30 mg/kg/day po.

Stanozolol (Winstrol-V) Anabolic steroid.

Stanozolol has been usedto decrease negativenitrogen balance inanimals with chronic renalfailure.

Stanozolol will produceanabolic effects withchronic use. There isincreased risk of hepatictoxicity, with cats being athigher risk.

Monitor liver enzymes intreated animals.

50 mg/mL injection;2mgtablets.

Dog: 2 mg/dog (or rangeof 1–4 mg/dog) q12h po;25–50 mg/dog/week IM.Cat: 1 mg/cat q12h po;25 mg/cat/week IM.

Sucralfate (Carafate,[Sulcrate in Canada])

Gastric mucosaprotectant. Antiulceragent. Binds to ulceratedtissue in GI tract to aidhealing of ulcers. There issome evidence thatsucralfate may act as acytoprotectant (viaprostaglandin synthesis).

Adverse effects have notbeen reported. Notabsorbed systemically.Drug interactions

Sucralfate may decreaseabsorption of other orallyadministered drugs (e.g.,fluoroquinolones andtetracyclines) via chelationwith aluminum.

Dosing recommendationsare based largely onempiricism. No clinicaltrials of efficacy inanimals. Sucralfate maybe administeredconcurrently withhistamine type-2inhibitors (e.g.,cimetidine).

1gtablets;200 mg/mL oralsuspension.

Dog: 0.5–1 g q8–12h po.Cat: 0.25 g q8–12h po.
