system of classification of
arthropods exists. The
classification adopted
here is a synthesis
of several views.
• According to
the majority of
zoologists, Phylum
Arthropoda is
classified into seven
subphyla and six classes.
• Of these, only trilobitomorpha,
chelicerata and mandibulata are definitely
arthropods while onychophora,
tardigrada, pentastomida and
pycnogonida show only
doubtful or superficial
relationships with other
arthropods.
• Earlier diplopoda and
chilopoda were treated as
orders and were included
in a single class myriapoda
with two more orders. These were
- pauropoda (e.g., Pauropus) and
symphyla (e.g., Scutigerella).
• Now, all of these are considered as separate classes.
