with moderately divergent corpora. Symphyseal region
broad, with low central keel and distinct pointed,
inferiorly b/l thickened mental trigon, with shallow
mental fossae on each side. In profile, appears there was
no subalveolar depression of the symphyseal region; the
mental trigon begins to emerge just below tips of
anterior tooth roots and expands inferiorly. Postincisal
plane is almost vertical and featureless except for a small
genial pit low down. Digastric fossae small, very shallow,
and downwardly facing, separated in midline by a
buccally pointing spit of bone. Seen from below, bone
noticeably thicker b/l at symphyseal region than the
bone of the corpora immediately behind. Large mental
foramen under P2. Rami relatively long a/p and
moderately tall. Gonial angle broadly rounded with
muscle scarring along its border. As seen on the L,
sigmoid notch is deepest in midline; sigmoid notch crest
runs to lateral border of condyle. Some pterygoid
roughenings lie low down on internal surface of gonial
angle. Mandibular foramen incomplete; a relatively long
mylohyoid groove descends from it, with no mylohyoid
line. Submandibular fossa long and quite concave.
Lower teeth not as similar to Qafzeh 9 as uppers.
M2s are erupted bilaterally and LM3 is visible in
crypt. Is relatively tall with gently divergent mesial
and distal edges; 12s somewhat larger than 11s. Cs
taller and more robust than I~s, with broad lingual
pillar having foveae on either side. As preserved on R,
P1 more swollen buccally than P2, which is more
swollen lingually. P1 protoconid is centrally placed,
moderately large, with low lingual swelling opposite
it; there are tiny anterior and slightly larger posterior
fovea, both fully enclosed, on either side of the lingual
swelling. P2 protoconid is slightly mesially shifted;
metaconid is slightly smaller than protoconid and
more mesially positioned. P2 has small mesial and
somewhat large distal foveae. Ml is somewhat larger
than M2 m/d and b/l. Both are relatively elongate
m/d, bulbously ovoid in outline, have some deep
enamel wrinkling, and lack trigonid basins. In both,
protoconid and entoconid bases make contact in mid-
dle of the very constricted talonid basin. Ml has rela-
tively large hypoconulids situated in midline of crown;
M2 lacks this cusp.
