424 Chapter 21
The Human Genome Project examined
the DNA of only a few people. In
fact, about 80 percent of the gene
sequences it identified came from
just eight individuals. Now an effort
called the 1,000 Genomes Project
aims to sequence the DNA of 1,000
anonymous participants from around
the world. Already, several thousand
new DNA sequences have been discovered. They represent
genetic variations that weren’t in the DNA sequenced by
the Human Genome Project. As the 1,000 Genomes Project
continues, it will provide a much more complete picture of
the genetic variety in humans—information that is almost
sure to translate into better understanding of the roles genes
play in health and disease.

Figure 21.25 Transgenic animals have become
important research subjects. The cloned sheep
Dolly is shown here with her first lamb. The lamb
was conceived the old-fashioned way.

- Which mutation would be more harmful: a mutation in
DNA or one in mRNA? Explain your answer. - Jimmie’s Produce put out a bin of tomatoes having beautiful
red color and looking “just right” in terms of ripeness. A
sign above the bin identified them as genetically modified
produce. Most shoppers selected unmodified tomatoes in the
neighboring bin, even though those tomatoes were pale pink
and hard as rocks. Which ones would you pick? Why? - Previous chapters have discussed various types of cloning,
including the cloning of stem cells and of embryos. Dolly,
the ewe shown with her first lamb in Figure 21.25, grew
from a cloned cell. Is cloning the same as genetic engineering?
Explain your answer.
