(MRM) Namma e:nadaluve kaṇḍu bandare he:ḷu, namma male ka:ḍina, tho:pu
ka:ḍina ira:da.
(Tell us if you happen to see anything of ours, from our male ka:ḍu , from
our tho:pu ka:ḍu .)
(BG) Ã adu ondu saṇṇadu gubisiyakki. Gubisiyakki namma ka:ḍina, male
ka:ḍiga bara:du innue
(Yes, that’s a small sparrow. The sparrow is of our forest, it still comes to
the male forest.)
Having looked at the major perceptual division in landscape/forest types made by the
Solega lexicon, I will now proceed to describe, in some detail, the other terminology
used by the Solega to describe their forest (Fig. 5.3 ).
5.3.1 Tho:pu ka:ḍu
As mentioned above, this fi rst term is slightly problematic, as I was given two very
different descriptions in the two elicitation sessions. In the second session, BG and
MRM stated that tho:pu was merely another word for male ka:ḍu , and that in much
the same way, the former also contrasted with na:ḍu ka:ḍu.
Extract III (S)
(BG) Male kaḍe tho:pu. Na:ḍu ka:ḍu tho:pu ille. Adu na:ḍu ka:ḍe horrega:ḍu 4
endive~ na:vu. Beṭṭa bo:ḷinda me:leka ira:du male ka:ḍu. Keḷageka ira:du
na:ḍu ka:ḍu. Adavave na:vu horega:ḍu enna:du.
(The male ka:ḍu itself is a tho:pu. The na:ḍu ka:ḍu is not a tho:pu. We
call the na:ḍu ka:ḍu a horega:ḍu. Above the mountain grasslands , you get
male ka:ḍu. Below, you get na:ḍu ka:ḍu. That’s the one we call horega:ḍu. )
(BG) Idu tho:pu ka:ḍu. Na:vu ira:della uwe i: ka:ḍella pu:ra tho:pu ka:ḍu.
(This is tho:pu ka:ḍu. This whole place we’re in, this forest is all tho:pu
ka:ḍu .)

(MRM) Illa, ella se:ri. Idu namma BRT adella, idu ishṭu ma:tra tho:pu ka:ḍu. I:ga
na:vu monne alliga ho:gidive~lla. Po:ḍugaḷige, allinda keḷake ella
horega:ḍu.
(No, all of it together. This BRT of ours, right, it’s only tho:pu ka:ḍu. The
place we went to a few days ago, right, to the villages, looking down
from there it’s all horega:ḍu .)
