dorsum at its base, with the rest of the tail ochraceous
orange for most of its length and black tipped.
S. g. chapmani—Trinidad and Tobago. It is a small yellow-
ish–reddish brown form.
S. g. chiriquensis—Panama. It is a medium-sized brownish
form, with a yellow to orange red venter.
S. g. chrysuros—near the city of Santa Fe de Bogotá (Colom-
bia). It is a large yellowish to reddish brown form, with a
yellow reddish venter and a black tip on the tail.
S. g. ferminae—Napo (eastern Ecuador). This form resembles
S. g. griseogena, but the upperparts tend more toward
brown and less toward olivaceous. The postauricular
spots are small and well defi ned. The tail is very red.
S. g. gerrardi—near the city of Medellín (Colombia). It has red
upperparts and underparts, with a black median band.
The tail has a black base and a red distal portion.
S. g. griseimembra—eastern slope of the Andes (Colombia). It
is a darker and more olivaceous form, with a gray inner
surface on the legs.
S. g. griseogena—coast of Venezuela. This form is character-
ized by a red tail with a black tip.
S. g. hoff manni—near the city of San José (Costa Rica). It is a
medium-sized brownish form, with a yellow to orange
red venter.
S. g. imbaburae—Imbabura (Ecuador). The dorsum is ochra-
ceous tawny grizzled with black, the venter is orange,
and the tail has a black tip.
S. g. llanensis—Los Llanos region (Venezuela). This form is
distinguished from S. g. griseogena by its larger size and
by its orange front legs, shoulders, and underparts.


S. g. manavi—Manabi (Ecuador). It is a medium-sized brown-
ish form, with a reddish venter and a black base to the tail.
S. g. maracaibensis—near Lake Maracaibo (Venezuela). This
form has a dark dorsum, mostly black, with only the
shoulders orange rufous. The underparts are orange
rufous.
S. g. meridensis—near the city of Mérida (Venezuela). This
form is characterized by a red tail with a black tip.
S. g. morulus—area now occupied by the Panama Canal (Pan-
ama). It has a reddish dorsum, with a black-tipped tail.
S. g. nesaeus—Margarita Island (Venezuela). This subspecies
has a light ochraceous tail and dorsum, with a bright or-
ange rufous venter.
S. g. norosiensis—Bolivar (Colombia). It is a bright agouti
form, with a paler and less blackish dorsum and a red
venter.
S. g. perijae—Magdalena (Colombia). This form is mixed or-
ange and black on the posterior of the dorsum, with a
black median stripe, orange shoulders, and a white
venter.
S. g. quindianus—Valle del Cauca (Colombia). This is a large
form, with a dark black dorsal stripe and a black tip on
the tail.
S. g. saltuensis—Magdalena (Colombia). This subspecies has
a light yellowish red dorsum grizzled with black, and a
whitish venter.
S. g. soederstroemi—near the city of Quito (Ecuador). It is a
small brownish form, with ochraceous underparts.
S. g. splendidus—near Magdalena (Colombia). This form has
a dark red dorsum and a white venter.
