Original biological assessments of Sierra de San Pedro Már-
tir described T. mearnsi as very common among other small
mammals; however, recent assessments found that Mearns’s
squirrel populations are usually low. The introduction of
eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) in 1946 may be a
serious threat; however, whether or not eastern gray squir-
rels remain in the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir is not known.
