his retirement as a player.

Forlan calls it a day


Former Manchester United and
Atletico Madrid striker DIEGO
FORLAN, who was capped 112 times
by Uruguay and last played for Kitchee
in Hong Kong in 2018, announced his
retirement at the age of 40.
Forlan left Independiente for
Manchester United in 2002 and went
on to play successfully in Spain for
Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, winning
the 2010 Europa League and twice
claiming the ESM Golden Shoe award
as Europe’s top goalscorer.
He also had spells in Italy
(Internazionale), Brazil (Internacional),
Japan and India, as well as with
boyhood club Penarol, with whom

he won the 2015-16 Uruguayan
championship.
With Uruguay, he won the 2011
Copa America and was one of the
stars as they reached the semi-
finals of the 2010 World Cup.

OBITUARIES

Walter MARTINEZ (1982-2019)
The striker won 49 caps for Honduras,
scoring 12 goals, and played in the 2010
World Cup in South Africa. As well as his
homeland, he also played club football
in China, Spain, USA, Guatemala and El
Salvador before retiring in 2016.

Jose Luis BROWN (1956-2019)
Central defender who was on the pitch
for every minute of Argentina’s success at
the 1986 World Cup, scoring the opening
goal as they beat Germany 3-2 in the
Final. After playing club football in
Argentina, Colombia, France and Spain,
he was technical assistant as his country
won gold at the 2008 Olympics.

Junior AGOGO (1979-2019)
A national hero when Ghana hosted the
Africa Cup of Nations, scoring the winner
in the quarter-finals against Nigeria.

Rene TAELMAN (1945-2019)
Former Belgian sports journalist who
took charge of the national teams of
Burkina Faso and Benin.

Peter Bonu JOHNSON (1963-2019)
Coached Gambia to victory over Brazil at
the Under-17 World Cup in 2005 with a
side later exposed as overage.

Dickson MAKWAZA (1942-2019)
The captain of the Zambia team that lost
in the Final of the 1974 Africa Cup of
Nations to neighbours Zaire.

Humphrey MIJNALS (1930-2019)
The first player of Surinamese extraction
to play for Holland. Elected Surinamese
footballer of the century in 1999.
