Note: The Chacoan peccary was first described from pre-Hispanic and subfossil remains by Rusconi in 1930 and was believed to be
an extinct species. In 1972 it was found alive in the Argentine Chaco (Wetzel et al. 1975; Wetzel 1977a, b, 1981).
