FACT OR FICTION?
‘Washing hair every day
makes it greasy’
The jury’s out here. Even the pros sit on different
sides of the hair-washing fence because how often
you shampoo will depend on your hair type and
lifestyle. If you have fine hair or are a regular
gym-goer, then Hayes recommends washing hair as
frequently as possible. “It won’t make it greasy,” he
says. “Washing hair regularly removes the build-up
of bacteria and dirt, as well as breaking down the
oils on the scalp.” For thick, coarse, textured or
afro hair the opposite is true. “Shampooing too
frequently can be drying to both strands and scalp,”
says Mensah, who suggests shampooing once a
week with a moisturising shampoo formulated for
dry or damaged hair.
THE BEST SHAMPOO FOR EVERY HAIR T YPE
For fine hair
Absolute Collagen Thickening Shampoo (£15)
is part of a new haircare range developed with a
trichologist that uses a collagen complex to
strengthen and protect thin, fine and flat hair.
For afro or textured hair
Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil
Strengthen & Restore Shampoo (£13)
uses Jamaican black castor oil and shea butter to
hydrate and repair damaged hair, as well as giving a
thorough clean. It is sulphate-free and safe for
chemically treated hair.
For dry, damaged hair
Virtue Recovery Shampoo (£38) is infused with
the brand’s signature protein blend, Alpha Keratin
60ku, which fills cracks in the cuticle in damaged
parts of your hair leaving it stronger. Hydrating
baobab seed oil and strengthening quinoa protein
help to bring brittle hair back from the brink.
For coloured hair
Formulated without sulphates, silicones or
conditioning agents, Color Wow Color Security
Shampoo (£19.50) washes away product
build-up (which can dull coloured hair) but,
crucially, doesn’t strip hair colour. Suitable for
keratin blow-dries and extensions.
