The nonsticky styling gel
Rahua Aloe Vera Hair Gel, £32
Forget the spiky, teenage-boy associations of hair gel.
This antioxidant-packed formula smooths, giving soft
hold. Apply to towel-dried hair for a silky blow-dry
with extra hold or for a sleek bun or ponytail pump a
tiny amount on to fingertips and slick down flyaways.
The scalp saver
Guerlain Abeille Royale Scalp & Hair
Youth Oil-in-Serum, £108
Guerlain’s first foray into haircare leaves your scalp
feeling revitalised, with no greasy roots or product
build-up. Apply one to two pipettes across the scalp
on dry or damp hair and massage in small circles.
The handbag must-have
Fable & Mane HoliRoots Hibiscus Hydrating
Hair Oil Mist, £26
Keep this in your bag for on-the-go hydration. Natural
AHAs from red hibiscus leave the hair soft and shiny,
while a spicy, floral scent gives tropical, holiday vibes.
Shake well, mist and comb through with your fingers.
The styling protector
Davines Liquid Spell, £36.50
This liquid-to-mousse texture adds extra body to your
hair while helping to minimise breakages caused by
heat styling. Apply three to four pumps to towel-dried
hair from roots to ends, comb through and style.
A PM treatment
Aveda Botanical Repair Strengthening
Overnight Serum, £40
If split ends and flyaways are your concern, pop
this lightweight serum on to lengths and ends and
leave overnight. As you sleep, avocado and
sunflower seed oils form a veil that helps to prevent
damage while you sleep and leaves ends looking
stronger and healthier.
For a colour refresh
L’Oréal Paris Elvive Colour Protect
8 Second Wonder Water, £10
You might have heard people raving about L’Oréal’s
original 8 Second Wonder Water for transforming
damaged hair in ... 8 seconds. This version seals in
colour while resurfacing and smoothing hair in the
same record time.
The hot new pair
Neom Super Shower Power Shampoo
and Conditioner, £20 each
Clear your shower shelf, the aromatherapy brand
Neom has stepped into haircare. Apple seed oil, plant
proteins and algae extract work to cleanse hair in
the shampoo, while in the conditioner coconut and
almond oils nourish and strengthen. Both have an
invigorating spearmint and eucalyptus scent.
The do-it-all oil
Bread Beauty Supply Macadamia Oil, £25
The idea of this oil is simple yet effective. Raw
macadamia oil deeply moisturises hair strands: either
glide on for a one-step prewash, leave in overnight or
add a few drops to your favourite hair mask for extra
soft hair. Ideal for curly, textured hair.
The hair scent
Ruka Hair Perfume, £25
The latest launch from the black-owned brand Ruka,
this sweet, coconutty, tropical hair perfume is
infused with traditional African ingredients such as
Zambian mongongo oil. Simply spritz three to four
times across the hair. Smells divine. ■
FACT OR FICTION?
‘Dandruff means
my scalp is dry’
Quite the opposite. “Dandruff is almost always an oily
scalp condition,” Anabel Kingsley says. “It’s a mild
form of seborrhoeic dermatitis, which occurs when
there is an overgrowth of certain yeasts. These yeasts
feed on oils found naturally on your scalp, so excessive
levels of oils often accompany dandruff.”
How to tell whether you have dandruff
or a dry scalp? “Pay attention to the flakes,”
Wong says. “With very dry skin you tend to
see much finer powdery white scales.”
THREE OF THE BEST FLAKE FIGHTERS
The shampoo
The Body Shop Ginger Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
(£7.50) helps to regulate the oil production
and it contains anti-inflammatory ginger to soothe
itchy, irritated scalps.
The balm
Head & Shoulders DermaXPro Soothing Relief
Anti Dandruff Scalp Balm (£10) combines
all the anti-dandruff ingredients you’d expect from
the brand that made its name looking after flaky
scalps — plus hydrating aloe and vitamin E to
help ease that tight, uncomfortable feeling.
The exfoliator
Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil
Micro Exfoliating Shampoo (£14) is a
shampoo/exfoliator hybrid that helps to slough
away dead skin cells and draw out impurities.
