eaningful travel is the buzz
phrase on everyone’s lips
these days. Well, here’s
your chance to get that off
to a flying start. A new
campaign launching exclusively in Sunday
Times Travel today has brought together
more than 40 luxury holidays for you to
bid for, with proceeds going directly to the
Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine
Humanitarian Appeal (dec.org.uk).
Worldwide trips going under the virtual
hammer include castaway-style retreats in
Thailand, the chance to meet Santa in
Sweden and a spa break in the foothills
of the Himalayas. Closer-to-home options
range from a hotel stay in Marylebone,
central London, to a week on a luxury
narrowboat at a private lake in north
Devon. To spur on the bidding, the
minimum price for all the lots is about 40
per cent of their real value, with reserve
prices starting from just £200.
The project hopes to raise tens of
thousands of pounds for the 11 million
people who have fled the conflict in
Ukraine. Every pound counts: £100 could
provide emergency food for two families
for a month; £50 could pay for blankets
for four families.
Kathryn Brierley, the founder and
managing director of the Healthy Holiday
Company and in:spa retreats, is behind
the initiative. She has rallied friends in the
travel industry, who have proved eager to
donate. “Like everyone, I’ve been
watching the news and feeling helpless,
but the #cookforukraine movement gave
me the idea to reach out to travel industry
colleagues to see if they wanted to
collaborate,” Brierley says. “Many showed
an immediate desire to contribute. The
response is especially heart-warming
given these are all businesses hit hard in
the last couple of years by the pandemic.”
We’ve outlined 12 of the most eye-
catching trips below; details of the
others are on uk.givergy.com/
travelforukraine. You have until
midnight on Sunday May 8 to get your
bids in. In the meantime, if you’d like to
comment about the auction on social
media, use #travelforukraine and get in
touch with us on Twitter at @TimesTravel.
Good luck!
