CONCLUSION
Complexation of the cationic surfactant DTMAB on aggregates of the
linear anionic polyelectrolyte SCPI was studied by increasing the surfactant
solution concentration in solutions of constant polyelectrolyte concentration.
Two clearly separated regimes of surfactant concentration are observed, one at
low concentrations where the surfactant binding occurs on individual
polyelectrolyte aggregates and on at high concentrations where secondary
aggregation takes place. Fluorescence spectroscopy reveals that the critical
aggregation concentration of the system is below our experimental
concentration window. The resulting complexes are of nanometer scale and
provide well-defined hydrophobic domains, while dilution of the solutions
may be viewed as a simple way for controlled release of a low molecular
weight hydrophobic component.
