limate has helped shape
human evolution. It is
long been known that
human evolution began in
Africa, and when the
climate there turned drier millions
of years ago it led early human
ancestors to walk on two feet as they
adapted from life in forests to living
on savannah grasslands. That said, it
has been difficult finding strong
evidence of climate playing a part in
shaping human evolution.
A recent supercomputer study
recreated two million years of the
Earth’s climate to see if the changes
influenced early human migration,
possibly leading to the emergence of
modern-day humans about 300,000
years ago. The model reconstructed
how changes in temperature and
rainfall might have shaped the
resources available to early species.
Especially interesting was how the
Earth’s astronomy may have spurred
human evolution. Astronomy comes
into play over long timespans, as the
gravity of other planets in the solar
system push and pull the Earth. For
example, the tilt of the Earth
oscillates over cycles of about 41,000
years, changing the intensity of the
seasons and how much rain falls
over the tropics. The Earth’s orbit
also changes over cycles of about
100,000 years, from a fairly circular
shape leading to stronger sunshine
and longer summers, to a more
elliptical orbit, which weakens
sunshine and leads to ice ages with
icesheets across much of the world.
The supercomputer combined
these astronomical fluctuations with
thousands of fossil records and other
archaeological evidence to work out
where and when six species of
humans, including modern Homo
sapiens, could have lived. The results
showed the best places for early
humans to enjoy a good climate
closely matched the fossil record of
human skulls and tools. According
to the model, a more elliptical orbit
of Earth about 700,000 years ago led
to wetter conditions in Africa at just
the time when the early human
species Homo heidelbergensis began
to migrate widely. And so migration-
friendly weather may have spurred
the spread of humans far and wide.
