eventually they became my main subject. They have
a major role in my painterly experiments.”
Talk to the artist even briefly and it is abundantly clear
how central they are to her practice. The way she
describes them borders on an obsession and, much like in
the paintings themselves, she seems to imbue them with
a real personality. “I absolutely love growing roses,” she
agrees. “[But] the good thing about them is that they grow
everywhere – they poke through the hedgerows and climb
up the walls. I see them every day while walking or driving
in the country. When I see roses, I see love and affection
at the same time. So, although I don’t have a garden big
enough to grow them as much as I like, their beauty and
flirting demeanour are present in my everyday life.”
