ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Th is collection of essays originated from the symposium ‘Rural Geographies of
Gender and Space: Britain 1840–1920’ held at the University of Warwick on 23
September 2011. Th e symposium was funded through the University of War-
wick’s Institute of Advanced Study (IAS) and an award from the University’s
Roberts Fund for Early Career Researchers. We are highly grateful for the gener-
ous support from both funds that enabled us to initiate the conversations and
debates that have taken shape in this collection.
Th anks are also due to members of the University of Warwick’s Department
of English and Comparative Literary Studies in helping us to shape the ideas and
directions of this research project. We are also grateful to those who have read
and commented on chapter draft s, and particular thanks go to Gill Frith and
Rachel Moseley for their advice and guidance throughout.
We would also like to thank the University of Warwick’s Humanities
Research Centre for providing us with valuable feedback in the early stages of
the collection’s development.
