inverse correlation (Fig. 11.11). The connection is certainly causal: the growing
phytoplankton reduce the fixed nitrogen, incorporating it in their organic constituents.
When the nitrate, phosphate, silicate, and other nutrients are reduced, phytoplankton
growth slows.
