subtropical Pacific at 30°N, 152°W. Salinity variation is minimized by plotting on the
nitrogen scale; it varied from 35.26 at the surface to a minimum of 34.00 at ∼540 m.
The salinity “inversion” is stabilized by the vertical temperature gradient. CLIVAR
