(^) In an earlier paper, Jumars and Fauchald (1977) used their classification system to
examine the relative occurrence of different feeding-guild members in soft sediments
at different depths. For data, they took a species-by-station (30 stations) table
generated mostly by the renowned polychaete systematist Olga Hartman for shelf and
slope sediments off the southern California coast, adding to it some Pacific slope and
abyssal data generated by Jumars. They displayed the data on ternary diagrams (Figs.
14.13 & 14.14), like that of Bilyard, but here the axes refer to the proportional guild
composition of the annelid fauna, rather than to the sediment mixture. Proportions
