Plate 11.3 Photographs of Arctic cod, seabirds, and beluga whales near Patrol Point,
Radstock Bay, in July 1991. (a) Aerial view of beluga and flying birds 100–200 m
offshore seaward of a cod school. There are >130 whales in the picture. Remnants of
a cod school in shallow water are visible in the top left corner. (b) The forward end of
a large school of Arctic cod. The school is 500 m long, of which about 50 m is shown.
Predation pressure is light (note the absence of birds) but a few whales are present.
