AN: The Leadership Incubator is a fi rst-of-its-kind fellowship
program providing young women in the U.S. with the training,
network expansion, mentorship, and community [they need]
to bring their bold vision for change to life. It’s an exciting
opportunity to leverage the best of what both of our organizations
have to off er to drive sustainable and innovative change.
TRESemmé has been a trusted brand for more than 70 years.
Their ethos and values are centered around helping women
confi dently make their mark on the world. We can’t think of a
better partner to help make that belief a reality.
S: Are there times when you feel disheartened or overwhelmed by
the work that is still ahead? How do you break out of that rut?
AN: When I’m feeling discouraged, I think a lot about women
leaders that I’ve met over the years, and all that they have
overcome. The world needs women and the talents we bring, it’s
not that women need the world’s help. That keeps me going, the
strength I see in the women leaders that I work with who keep
getting up every day. It’s hard.
S: Discovering ways to practice self-care
is critical, even with a busy schedule like
yours. How do you make it work? How
does it benefi t you?
AN: I think of self-care as what I’m doing
for myself so that I can be a better leader
for everybody else. I used to be a big
runner before I had kids. I would just go
out and run—it was so freeing, and you
could do it anywhere! With kids it is more
challenging. I’m a big believer in getting
exercise in whatever way you can. I take
the stairs, I have a stationary bike at home, I go to barre classes, I
walk to work. I make it part of my lifestyle, because I never know
what to expect. [I use a] meditation app, which I originally got
for my kids. Of course, I do have my vices: coff ee, wine, a little
chocolate here and there. It’s all about balance.
S: You clearly have the mind and body aspect of self-care covered,
what about beauty? Does that play any role?
AN: Absolutely. [Every day I consider:] How can we be our best
selves and put that forward? It’s not about what other people think
I look like; it’s about how I feel about myself. Getting enough water
is a huge part of my beauty routine—it’s such a critically important
thing. Also, my hair dramatically changed after my kids were born.
I cut it pretty short and discovered a product that I absolutely love:
TRESemmé Keratin Smooth. Because my hair is fi ne it provides
hold, and it has really helped it look healthier.
S: Any advice for future female leaders?
AN: Use your power to empower. Think about what your driving
force is. What is your personal mission statement? One of the
greatest things I’ve learned in this journey is that no one’s path to
leadership is planned out perfectly, mine included. It’s really about
following your passion, fi nding that purpose. People are going to
tell you you’re crazy. People used to ask me, “Why do you work in
women’s issues? Feminism is dead.” Well, feminism has woken
back up. I think as women begin to lead as their authentic selves,
they’re really going to change the world. The world desperately
needs what women bring right now.
