and speed. In contrast, Labrador Retrievers
were bred for hunting, a job that requires them
to run straight to retrieve game and return
directly to the hunter. However, regardless of
possible functional reasons for quantitative
differences in dog gaits, both breed‐ and struc-
ture‐related differences in quantitative gait
characteristics should be established and
accounted for when assessing the gaits of
different breeds.
