Threatened species monitoring on
Aboriginal land: finding the common
ground between Kuka, Jukurrpa,
Ranger work and science
Rachel Paltridge and Anja Skroblin
Summary
Indigenous lands support the last strongholds of some of Australia’s iconic desert
species. Over the past decade, Indigenous Ranger programs have facilitated an
expansion of Indigenous management initiatives, and fostered growing
participation of Traditional Owners in monitoring threatened species for
conservation outcomes. This chapter explores how to develop long-term threatened
species monitoring projects with Indigenous partners that are effective in terms of
their ability to (1) engage Traditional Owners; (2) capture data that can detect
change in population status; and (3) enable the recovery of the species. It draws on
case studies of scientists working with Indigenous groups on threatened species
