Today’s pick

Just William... and
Richmal
Radio 4, 4.30pm
Richmal Crompton’s boy with
the school shorts, cap, dirty
knees, catapult and
incessantly naughty
behaviour is 100 years old.
The comedy writer and
performer Edward Rowett
marks the publication of the
first collection of William
stories in May 1922. Helping
him are Neil Gaiman, the
Times writer Caitlin Moran,
right, and the actor Martin
Jarvis, who has been radio’s

voice of William. The stories
have an overlooked comic
legacy, Rowett argues, and
deftly satirised the absurdities
and hypocrisies of adult life.
Ben Dowell
