Today’s pick

Vaughan Williams Today
Radio 3, noon
As part of Radio 3’s Vaughan
Williams Today season,
marking the 150th
anniversary of the
composer’s birth, Donald
Macleod has been taking a
fresh look at his life and work
this week in a retrospective
that spans four weeks
and twenty programmes.
Today’s programme, called
Adventures Abroad, recounts
Vaughan Williams’s trips to
the State Opera, concerts and
museums and galleries of

Germany and how it
influenced him. British music
had been considered inferior
to the great German
compositions. Until, of course,
Vaughan Williams started
writing. Ben Dowell
