has no basis in either the Witcher novels or videogames.
Well, until now! The important point about the School
of the Lynx, if indeed CDPR is roughly hewing towards
this unofficial history, is that it is explicitly post-Geralt in
setting: but would still leave the door open to appearances
by him and others from the original Witcher trilogy. CDPR
has previously been clear that the next Witcher wouldn’t
feature Geralt as lead, nor be called Witcher 4. Despite
speculation inevitably focussing around existing
characters, mainly Ciri, there’s a strong chance CDPR may
instead pursue original characters that it will own the
rights to: it renewed its rights agreement with Witcher
creator Andrzej Sapkowski in 2019 , and the deal most
notably says, “The agreement confers new rights upon
[CDPR] and reaffirms its existing title to ‘The Witcher’
intellectual property in developing videogames, graphic
novels, board games, and merchandise.”
What we do know is that, following the Cyberpunk
2077 launch after over two years of hype, CDPR has said it
won’t be showing trailers and demos for future games
until much closer to launch. So don’t expect to see the
next Witcher this year but, once the game itself is shown,
the monster-slaying will be imminent.
