t's helpful to know the lan-
guage of your area of expertise
or interest. Helps with compre-
hension and helps with credibili-
ty when you speak. Here are the
defi nitions of some common terms
heard at the track:

`Call: Announcement over the
public address system that lets
track day riders know when it is
their turn to go on track. May be
in the form of several stages, as in
First Call, Second Call, Third and
Final Call.

`Corner Worker: Staffers sta-
tioned around the track in strate-
gic locations, Corner Workers mon-
itor the on-track activity and the
condition of the surface and report
to Race Control, which may direct
Corner Workers to communicate
with riders using colored fl ags.

`Club Race: A sanctioned race
event that usually involves
non-professional Amateur/Novice
and Expert riders racing in many
different classes based on ma-
chine size and specifi cations, for
trophies, not purse money. Often
takes place at a single track, or a
limited number of tracks, in a spe-
cifi c geographic area. Pro riders
may show up if manufacturers or
other companies offer contingency
(money contingent upon the rider's
performance).

`Grid Marshal: The person who
directs the fl ow of traffi c onto the
track. Typically found at the en-
trance to the hot pit lane.

`Hot Pit: Where riders enter and
exit the track, as well as pull off
of the racing surface for minor ad-
justments to the machine. The hot
pit is considered part of the racing
surface and frequently does not
have a speed limit, so care must
be exercised when working there.

`Impact Zone: Where crashed
motorcycles typically end up out-
side a corner, so a rider or motor-
cycle in that area is at risk of being
hit by another crashing motorcy-
cle. A rider who crashes or suffers
a mechanical breakdown and ends
up in an impact zone is told to get
up and get out of the way, or help
is summoned if they need it.

`National Race: A sanctioned
racing event that is part of a series
staged at racetracks across the
country, and pays purse money.
Attracts Professional and Semi-Pro
racers and teams.

`Novice/Expert Racers: Riders are
classifi ed as Novices and Experts
(or Amateurs and Experts), based
on experience and results. Experts
have more competition experience.

`Professional Race: A race in
which the competitors compete for
a cash purse, usually in front of
paying audiences.

`Race Director: Person in charge
of activities at the track day. May
be found in the control tower, ad-
ministrative headquarters, regis-
tration or tech inspection. If you
have questions or problems, often
the person to fi nd.

`Regional Race: A sanctioned
race event that takes place at a se-
ries of tracks that are in the same
geographic area. Typically held for
non-professional racers, although
pro riders may attend.

`Riders’ Meeting: Mandatory
gathering of riders participating in
that day's event, prior to riding on
the track. Flags, track conditions,
riding requirements, no-passing
areas, etc. are discussed here.

`Tech: Typically refers to Techni-
cal Inspection, where your motor-
cycle is inspected for safety and
rules compliance.

DEFINITIONS: WHAT’S THAT MEAN?
