Djokovic: I’m

sad for Becker

Stuart Fraser Tennis Correspondent

Jim Ratcliffe’s dramatic late £4.25 bil-
lion bid for Chelsea came in lower than
the offers tabled by the three US-led
consortiums, a senior source close to
the process has claimed.
The Times revealed on Friday that
Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s richest men,
had attempted to hijack the process
when only days earlier the three short-
listed bidders had made their final
presentations at Stamford Bridge.
By Friday evening it had emerged
that the group fronted by Todd Boehly,
the American billionaire and co-owner
of the Los Angeles Dodgers, had been
identified by Chelsea and their New
York-based bankers as the preferred
bidders. Ratcliffe, however, has not
given up and is understood to be lobby-
ing the government on the grounds
that his is the only solely British bid.

Novak Djokovic has said he was left
“heartbroken” after his former coach
Boris Becker received a prison sentence
of 2½ years for hiding £2.5 million worth
of assets.
Becker, a six-times grand-slam
champion, was jailed on Friday after
being found guilty at Southwark crown
court of four charges relating to his
bankruptcy. He spent the first
weekend of his term at Wandsworth
prison in southwest London and will
serve at least 15 months before being
eligible for release.
Speaking for the first time since
Becker’s sentence was delivered, Djok-
ovic expressed sadness for the sorry
position his old mentor and friend now
finds himself in. Becker helped Djokovic
to win six grand-slam titles during a

Everton reignite survival bid

Paul Joyce

Richarlison faces an FA
investigation after hurling a blue
smoke canister off the Goodison
Park pitch in the aftermath of his
winning goal against Chelsea which
bolstered Everton’s hopes of
Premier League survival.
Everton insisted that the Brazilian
had tossed the pyrotechnic, which
had landed on the playing surface
after his crucial 46th-minute strike,
through a gap in the corner of the
stadium. Club officials said they
would look into the incident, with
the FA launching its own inquiry.

Several flares were thrown from the
crowd and the flashpoint came after
Everton scored to give them a 1-0
victory and keep their battle to beat
the drop in their own hands.
Everton had been welcomed by
thousands of supporters in the
streets outside and a frenzied
atmosphere was maintained as
Frank Lampard’s side continued
their good home form.
Everton remain in 18th place, two
points behind Leeds United and
Burnley, who are on 34 points, but
with a game in hand. They now
face games away to Leicester City
and Watford.

up and seeing the fans as we went
through on the bus is special. It is
special, it is not the norm. If it
doesn’t give you goosebumps, if it
doesn’t get you ready to go out and
give everything, then there is
something wrong with you. You
shouldn’t be playing the game.
“They were the 12th man, they
were the people of the match. When
the club comes together at
Goodison that is amazing and that
is why results have been so good
here. The negative is when we go
away from home our players can’t
replicate what we do here. That is
the next challenge.”
