UK and Ireland Noon today Forecast A round the U K
Atlantic front Around the world
Close out the UK bank holiday with
a delightful sight this evening.
A wafer-thin crescent moon will
hang between the star Aldebaran
and the planet Mercury about 9pm.
Begin your search as twilight falls
and look low towards the western
horizon.
Aldebaran is a red giant 65 light
years from Earth and is the
brightest star in the constellation
Taurus. At roughly 240,000 miles
away, the moon is 1.25 light seconds
distant.
Tonight, it will be a new moon,
with 3.5 % of its visible surface
illuminated. Catching a glimpse of
this alone would make the eff ort
worthwhile, but the real prize lies
just beyond: Mercury. Currently
situated 72m miles from Earth,
Mercury is 6.4 light minutes away.
The Pleiades cluster may also be
visible beyond Mercury at 9.33pm.
The chart shows the view west-
north-west from London at 9pm.
