hen it comes to period

homes, the verdict is

unanimous. heir timeless

grace, charm and beauty should be

cherished. With stunning leadlight

windows, intricate cornices, exquisite

archways and ornate ireplaces, the

beautiful features of a heritage house

are well worth preserving. Indeed, even

the darkest and most dilapidated of

these homes have renovator’s delight

stamped all over them.

But if you’ve snapped up a period

abode with a view to undertaking a

restoration or extension, you may feel

a little overwhelmed by the task ahead.

For it brings with it a responsibility to

ensure the new works continue to stand

the test of time while respecting the

character of the original.

‘here is often a ine line when we are

working with a period home between

restoring the features and wanting to

retain some of the character that shows

the age of the building,’ says Melbourne
