PORT LINCOLN TOURNAMENT
SUCCESSFUL

The recent Peter Teakle Wines Blue
Water Classic, hosted by the Game
Fishing Club of SA and based in Port
Lincoln, has been hailed a great success
by all who took part. This is regarded
as the premier event on the GFCSA’s
annual competition calendar, attracting
plenty of entries and a lot of interest
from within the game fishing fraternity.
The event was structured a little
differently this year, being run from a
home-base set up and offering daily
prizes, restricted fishing times and
regular evening social gatherings.

Memory Cove, south of Port Lincoln, was
the designated competition headquarters
and provided a great overnight anchorage
for all competing teams.
The weather gods certainly smiled
on all who took part, with blue skies,
light winds and calm seas experienced
for much of the week. All up, 24 anglers

participated, targeting all manner
of game fish, including bluefin tuna,
yellowtail kings, sharks and eagle rays.
Prominent among the catch was Ashley
North’s 130kg bronze whaler taken on
15kg line, which eventually enabled him
to take out the Champion Angler trophy.
Some 177 southern bluefin were tagged
and released throughout the tournament,
earning their captors valuable points and
ensuring plenty of on-water rivalry.
Ralph Czabayski’s ‘Spartacus’
emerged as Champion Boat in the over
25 foot category with a massive total
of 29,281 points, while ‘Game Changer’
took out the under 25 category with
1,896 points.
Planning is already underway for
next year’s Blue Water Classic, and the
GFCSA welcomes enquiries from any
keen anglers who may be interested in
taking part. There is no better way to
learn about game fishing techniques and
tackle than joining the Club. Visitors are
always welcome at monthly meetings.
