SQUID JIGS
SPOT ON EXTREME
We all like a nice feed of Calamari from time to time but until the latter part of last
century, Squid were mostly caught in South Australia for bait. Squid are a great bait
as preferred by most seas anglers as they are excellent on the chew and being one of
the most common creatures around our coastline, are easily accessible.
Squidding at your local jetty is a great pastime and only requires a minimal amount
of gear. Any soft actioned rod 2-5KG matched with a 1000 – 2500 sized reel spooled
with 10-15lb monofilament is ideal. Most anglers also use a Squidder float that keeps
the Squid Jig above the weed, yet still close to the sea bed where they dwell.
Squid are sight hunters (just look at the size of their eyes), so flash and movement is
the key. Use good quality squid jigs like those from Yamashita, Yozuri, Shimano and of
course, our own Spot On Xtreme Jigs that are selected especially by our store owners.
Squid jigs come in many colours but Squid actually see shades of grey. The different
Squid colours are necessary to adapt the different light levels. Squidding on a bright
sunny day may need a different colour jig to a dull shady day or at night, where a
luminous jig has a clear advantage. There are also UV sensitive jigs that enhance
minimal light to attract Squid.
Whether you are on a jetty, rocks, sand or in a boat, cast the jig out over a weed bed
allow it to sink near the bottom and then work it erratically back towards you. Once
you hook the squid, keep constant pressure by winding slowly, ensuring that there
is always a bend in the rod tip. Try to point the squid away from yourself and other
when you lift them out of the water as their ink can stain clothes and then kill them
quickly with a knife or a firm hit to where the head and tube meet. This will ensure
that the flesh doesn’t tense up and it makes for better eating or softer bait. It is also
more humane for the Squid.
Squidding off the Jetty is a great pastime for families and relatively cheap to get into.
