South Australian Angler – June 2018

(Nancy Kaufman) #1
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT
FROM THE LIB’S?
The March state election result looks set
to change the way many things happen
in South Australia over the next four
years. It will take a while to see exactly
how many pre-election promises the
new Liberal Government chooses to
honour, and of particular interest to
keen anglers is the list of changes they
pledged concerning recreational fishing.
Most of what the Lib’s put forward in
the lead up to the election sounded
constructive, and we now have to keep
on their backs to ensure these promises
are kept.
I don’t know much about new
Minister for Primary Industries
and Regional Development, Tim
Whetstone, but I intend to meet with
him some time in the near future
to establish lines of communication
between his office and the magazine.
I do know Tim is a keen recreational
angler and boatie, which definitely
kicks things off well!
It’s worth taking a quick look back at
what the Liberal Party promised they
would do for rec’ anglers before we
voted in March. The new Government
will be under plenty of scrutiny from all
sectors, and I would urge our readers
to keep an eye on what Steven Marshall
said pre-election, and what he and his
party actually does to follow through.
This may sound a bit cynical on my part,
but we all know about Governments and
their promises!
Let’s take a quick look at what the
Lib’s put forward in the lead-up to the
March election to entice the votes of
recreational fishers.
First up, $1.2 million will be allocated
to establishing three new artificial reefs

off Adelaide. Exactly where these will be
located hasn’t yet been announced.
Secondly, RecFish SA will be
disbanded and replaced by a Fisheries
Council, comprised of representatives
from both the commercial and
recreational fishing sectors.
Thirdly, the outer boundaries of
some of the State’s Marine Park No Take
Zones will be re-examined with the
intention of making them smaller and
less obtrusive.
Fourthly, the Boating Facilities Fund
(designed to maintain, improve and
upgrade boating facilities statewide)
will be made easier to access by local
communities.
Finally, stocking programs for our
reservoirs will be expanded to enable
more opportunities for those who enjoy
fishing fresh water.
I’m sure you’ll agree that these five
areas are extremely important to the
future of recreational fishing here,
and they should be easy to monitor
as the Liberal Government becomes
established and prepares its agenda.
Meanwhile, we will continue to run
a regular column by PIRSA Director,
Sean Sloan, who will undoubtedly have
plenty to say about the way our fishery
is headed under the new regime.
Watch out for the return of ‘PIRSA’s
View’ in the August/September issue.
