OF
Developed in the 1930s under constraints imposed by the Treaty of Versailles
and described as a highspeed mail plane for Lufthansa, the D017 was in fact a breed of
fast attack light bomber, intended to carry out raids at speeds making it almost impervious
to interception. With its sleek tapering fuselage, it was soon nick named ‘The Flying Pencil’
although this design prevented anything more than a modest bombload being carried.
Corgi Aviation Archives 1/72 die-cast metal model is of Do17Z-2 that took part in the 1941
invasion of Greece RRP £82.49 (AA38807)
NOT SO WELCOME IN GREECE
£75.00
From September 2009 four Typhoon FGR.4 have
operated as 1435 fl ight from RAF Mount Pleasant
airfi eld, as the Falklands defence force. Postings are
prized as the sparsely populated Islands allow the
opportunity for some rather enthusiastic fl ying!
The four carry tail
codes F, H, C and D
to denote Faith, Hope
and Charity, with
Desperation acting as
reserve, reminiscent
of another island’s
defence (AA36408)

TOUGH TRAINER
Aviation 72’s neat model of the RAF Tucano
trainer turned out in a camoufl age livery for
the 2013 RAF display season The RAF en-
countered the Tucano in the Falklands in 1982
and subsequently
adopted a variant
built by Short Bros,
Belfast as an early
stage trainer. A
great little aircraft.

ON THE NORTHERN FRONT
On September 13, 1987 Flanker B Red 36 piloted by
Senior Lieutenant Vassily Tsimbal intercepted Norwegian
P-3 Orion 602 fl own by Lt. Salvesen and 9 crew members
off the Kola Peninsula. On the last of three passes, the
Su-27’s vertical stabilizer hit the P-3 propeller tearing the
tip off and sending
a piece of propeller
into 602 causing
decompression.
Remarkably both
aircraft safely
returned to base.
A superb model
