TIE ONE ON
Wrapping fabric around the base—
or length—of a slick ponytail takes
the look from austere to cool.
McNaughton first used a fine-tooth
comb to spread mousse evenly (from
roots to ends) through dry hair and
then scraped it back from the face—
you can see every pass of the comb,
which adds interesting texture. (We
like Healthy Sexy Hair Fresh Hair Air
Dry Styling Mousse.) She secured the
ponytails with regular elastics, then
wrapped black fabric (try cloth ribbon
from a craft store) around them,
keeping the cloth in place with
double-stick fabric tape. (Stick the
ribbon to itself so the tape doesn’t rip
out your hair.) For extra shine, sweep
the length of the ponytail with
serum (we like John Frieda Frizz Ease
Original 6 Serum). To wrap the fabric
all the way down the length of
the ponytail, McNaughton cut a piece
that was about three times as
long as the hair. She held one side of
the ribbon flat against the hair and
wrapped the other around it, so no
hair would peek through, and finished
by knotting the fabric at the bottom.

UP AND AWAY
Make a play for your own action-hero
franchise with an aerodynamic
ponytail that seems caught in motion.
Hairstylist Tamara McNaughton
constructed an internal framework of
hair extensions, which were bobby-
pinned to the head (you can also use
a bun hairpiece). Then she swept the
hair into a high ponytail, concealing
all that scaffolding and faking major
tease. As a final touch, spritz
hair spray at the roots—aim the can
toward the ceiling to turn up the
volume even more (try Tresemmé
Compressed Micro Mist Hair Spray).
