CHIGNONS
BACKSTAGE BEAUTY
We’re gonna call it the Meghan Markle effect: Demure updos
had a moment this season. But it wasn’t the same boring knot
over and over again. Hairstylists experimented with striking
iterations of the low bun: There were ropy, braided chignons
at Self-Portrait and Richard Quinn, complicated loops at Cong
Tri, and regal braided buns at Brandon Maxwell. Whichever
way you try out the trend, just make sure to have a can of hair
spray, the product that was used at every one of these shows
to keep hair sleek and secure.

There was nothing
middle of the road—or
midlength—about the
runways’ coolest
haircuts. We saw more
models than ever with
pixies and bobs in Paris,
New York, and Milan.
And hairstylist Guido—
who cut many of
those bobs for Miu Miu
and Prada (above)—
also went to the other
extreme, adding miles
of extensions at shows
like Tory Burch (right)
and R13. “When you see
hair that’s super long or
super short, it makes
you question what
you’re looking at—I like
the way that very
long hair has strange
connotations,” he
says. “It almost looks a
bit fetish-y to me.”

TREND
Makeup artists really emphasized
the “false” in false lashes, finding
new and quirky ways to exaggerate
them. “It’s almost a cartoonish inter-
pretation of Polly Maggoo’s [’60s-mod]
makeup,” says makeup artist Peter
Philips of the chunky lashes he drew
on models with matte black liquid lin-
er at Dior. At Giambattista Valli,
makeup artist Val Garland went even
further, coating false lashes in
chrome-colored paint (a blend of
M.A.C. Mixing Medium Eyeliner and
M.A.C. loose silver pigment) and glit-
ter. She placed the metallic fringes
under the eyes for a look that was
arts and crafts meets A.I.
