continuing to reach out to people and
continuing to offer the highest quality
presentations as well as tools such as
continuous professional development. We
also want to bring about improvements in
navigational safety through our influence at the
International Maritime Organization.
There is a very positive development on
Cyprus with the development of a number of
maritime academies for cadets. It is our hope to
be involved in these areas since we have a role
to play with the professional development of
the cadets and their knowledge.

Would you say their branches in different
countries experience significant differences
in the shipping industry/cluster?
Of course there are local differences between
branches but we are a very international body
and the concerns of our members in, say,
Hong Kong match our own here in Cyprus.
Different maritime clusters have different
specialities. For example, we are focused on the
ship management needs for container ships,
bulk carriers and tankers. If you went to The
Nautical Institute branch meeting in Scotland,

you might find that they do far more in areas
such as offshore, oil rig support and dynamic
positioning. But because we are an international
organisation, what we learn from all these
topics feeds across to all our branches.

Are there good prospects for the younger
generation within the shipping industry
locally?
The fact is that Europe needs a new generation
of seafarers, and the younger generation here on
the island of Cyprus have a key role to play. It is
absolutely essential – not only for ships – but for
all the other support industries that rely on ships
such as ports, pilots, harbourmasters, maritime
lawyers and cargo surveyors.

What advice would you give the younger
generation coming into the shipping
industry?
l Get some sea experience. This is really
important to understand how ships work and
operate.
l Network really hard and get involved with all
the shipping activities on the island. Come to
our meetings.

This is an excellent introduction to the
Branch and its activities. Over the next
few issues, Seaways will begin running
regular profiles of individual branches, their
members and activities. Some branches
have strengths in particular areas, some in
others, and as a worldwide network, there
is always something to be learnt from best
practice elsewhere! If you would like your
branch to feature in a profile, please contact
the editor – [email protected]

l Read our journal Seaways and The Navigator
magazine online to get an impression of what
we do.
l Join The Nautical Institute as a student
member or an associate member.
