NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
SPIRAL NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP
A large fleet, good breezes and excellent courses
made for a great Spiral Nationals over the three
days of the Australia Day weekend. Over the
whole seven races competition was intense
throughout the field as sailors hotly contested
divisions within the overall rankings.
An almost full range of weather conditions
were on offer over the weekend with twenty
plus knots of nor-easter for the first two races
and a similar strength westerly in races five
and six. Races three, four and seven were in
lighter to moderate strength breeze.
J24 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Dave Suda, the 'Black Prince of
Sandringham’ sailing Pacemaker
convincingly won the 2015 J24
National Championships held in
Adelaide in January. With the series
win in the bag after eight wins out
of the ten races sailed in comfortable
conditions, they were spectators at
the last start, watching Doug Watson
(El Fideldo) win the last race. Sixteen
crews from SA, VIC and NSW enjoyed
excellent racing under the control of
PRO John Gibson of the CYCSA.
AUSTRALIAN SABOT NATIONALS
Townsville Sailing Club hosted the 51st Sabot Nationals
and John Byrne Sabot Week. The regatta experienced
light morning airs for the Sabot
week races with building sea breezes
for the majority of the afternoon
Nationals racing. A couple of rain
squalls later in the week bought a bit
of excitement to spectators and sailors
alike as nearby Magnetic Island
vanished in a rain squall and then
the entire fleet disappeared, soon to
reappear onshore with lots of smiling
sailors who enjoyed the quick run
back to the club.
LASER AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
2015 MANDURAH WA
170 boats contested the Laser
National Open and Masters
Championship which was held over
Christmas New Year at Mandurah
Offshore Fishing and Sailing
Club WA. Sailing conditions were
character building with mostly 15 to
25 knot winds on the Indian Ocean.
World number one ranked Laser
sailor Tom Burton and Perth local
Matthew Wearn were in a class of
their own at the front of the Laser
Standard Rig fleet with Tom winning
enough of the races to wrap the series
up with two races to go.
