Port Calanova Reform
Works Begin

We are delighted to report
that the reform works at
Calanova have, at long last
begun. The work is now
underway and now it’s full
steam ahead for this great
little marina in the corner of
the Bay of Palma.

The redevelopment plans
here are truly ambitious, and
when completed will provide
a fabulous facility for all types
of boat from canoes and
dinghies up to 80 ft yachts.

Historically, the biggest
problem facing boat owners
here has been the swell which
rolls in when a southerly wind
blows and the waves bounce
back into the marina from
the rocks by Cala Major. The
new design of the marina
entrance, where an extension
is being constructed at 90 ° to
the existing wall will stop this
problem and provide a
safe haven and calm
berthing facility.

The plans as can be seen
in the attached plan, will
provide a fabulous base for

the world famous Cala Nova
Sailing School, as well as the
berth holders and visiting
yachtsmen. The sailing school
attracts students from all over
Spain, and has recently signed
an agreement for a summer
camp where the students
will learn to sail and attend
a football training school
locally. The team manager of
the Spanish national football
team, Vincente del Bosque,
recently visited Mallorca
to present the news of
these camps.

The marina only came into

private ownership a year ago,
after spending its previous
30 odd years under the state,
and the redevelopment
will certainly bring many
more international visitors
to the marina. One of their
intentions is to attract
international Olympic sailing
teams to use the facility as
a training base, especially
during the winter months, and
to help facilitate this, they are
developing a whole block of
en-suite bedrooms which will
be available to rent.

The Islander is looking into
the possibility of starting
some dinghy racing, probably
in Lasers from the marina,
and anyone interested should
email [email protected]
to register their interest.
