have introduced cooling
products to make this summer
more comfortable.
Dometic’s Cuddy is a big
deal for sailboat owners
with limited space and no
generator because it works
from a 12v DC battery supply.
Drawing a manageable 30
Amps, it will comfortably keep
a cabin cool all night at anchor
before you have to charge
the batteries again (based on
a 400Ah service bank). In a
marina the battery charger
will keep it going indefinitely.
The Cuddy is made from high
quality materials found in
larger boats and is priced to
become a popular addition to
small vessels. We’re seeing
interest from yacht
tenders too.
Climma’s big innovation is a
variable speed chiller unit.
Targeted at medium to large
yachts (with multiple units),
the DC50 operates at between
10 and 50,000 btu in a single
unit, automatically delivering
the power required by the
demand on board. Seeing
the unit in operation as like
listening to a very quiet gas
turbine engine start up. The
remarkable build quality, quiet
running and noticeable lack
of vibration are an engineer’s
dream. As older units are
retired, the practical benefits
of the DC50s are sure to see
rapid adoption. There are no
harsh startup loads because
of the variable speed, and
overall power consumption
is lower with reports of
up to 50% savings in many
cases. The lack of startup
also prolongs component
life, avoiding the brutal jolts
characteristic of conventional

little water or become full
