NEWS 4 STEWS
From Ship to Shore
Emma Barnard
Every month we interview
someone who has made the
transition from working and
living on a yacht to a land-
based life. This month I spoke
with Emma Barnard, who left
yachting over a year ago
and is now a full-time mum
in Mallorca.
Can you tell me about your
yachting career?
I started my yachting career
11 years ago – wow, where
did that time go?! I was
working in Paris with five
other girls doing promotional
work for Euro Disney. One of
the girls was keen to travel to
Antibes to start her yachting
career so we all followed. We
all agreed that we could not
afford to live in Paris so we
jumped on a train and headed
to the south of France. That
was where it all began.
Life was fun and exciting as
we were all on a mission to
find work; we said if it didn’t
work out we could always
head home. I got my first job 4
weeks into my stay in Antibes.
11 years later I had travelled
from France to Spain, Italy,
and America and worked
extremely hard to reach
the position of Chief Stew.
I was a professional dancer
before that so it was quite a
change, but that gave me the
discipline to work long hours
and to keep smiling.
The highs of the job were
meeting interesting and
influential people; visiting
some amazing places; and of
course charter tips. The lows
of yachting are missing family
and friends and big events like
weddings and birthdays.
How did you know it was
time for you to make the
move to land?
All of a sudden I was turning
40 and was only thinking of
one thing: it’s time to have
a baby. Fortunately I fell
pregnant which was the best
news ever.
How did you know it was
time for you to make the
move to land?
Because I was ready to
become land based, I had no
difficulties with the transition.
The best thing that has ever
happened to me was having
my beautiful baby girl.
What do you miss most
about yachting?
I don’t have time to miss
anything about yachting!
What do you do now?
For now I am a mum and
enjoying every minute of it.
Do you have any advice
for fellow yachties about
going land-based?
Before you go land-based
make sure you have saved and
invested your money wisely.
