ccording to Skeeter pro team member Jerry Mitchell, the
crappie bite will be going full steam in April.
“This is the time of year to think real shallow for crap-
pie,” Mitchell said. “They’ll be in 1 to 2 feet of water spawning.
“One of the most-effective ways to catch these fish in April is
to use a jig beneath a popping
cork. You’ll need to experi-
ment to see what color they
prefer on any particular day.”
Mitchell focuses on flooded
trees for largemouths.
“The bass will still be spawn-
ing around the roots of the
cypress trees, and floating
lizards, the Senko, a spinner
bait or jig will work on these
fish,” he said.
Bream will also begin show-
ing up in numbers.
“You can also look for the
bream to be starting to bed in
April, with the chinquapins
starting first,” Mitchell said.
“Either small crawfish or cold
worms are the best baits for
the spawning fish. They really
love the little crawfish, and
you can usually find all you
need by seining water-filled
d i t c h e s .”Red River South

“You need to go back as
far as you can and throw a
floating lizard, spinner, jig
or other type of soft-plastic
baits,” Mitchell said. “Bass just
about always head as far back
in these areas as they can get,
and you can catch some big
fish here this time of year.It’s time to
