“The crappie will be starting to spawn in the shallow areas, as well.
Shiners or jigs fished around shallow brush or stumps will usually work.
“The bream will be starting to bed up in April in the oxbows, and when
you locate a bed you can catch plenty on worms or crickets.”

Cane River
“April is the time to head to mid-lake areas around Shell Beach and fish
for bass with spinners or soft plastics,” Mitchell said. “They’ll be hanging
around shallow structure starting to spawn, and you can usually catch
some pretty good bass here.
“The crappie will be in just about any little nook, cut or inlet on the lake.
There aren’t many of these spots on Cane River, but find the right one and
the fish could be bunched up there. Shiners or jigs are the ticket to catch
crappie here this time of year.
“Bream will be starting to
bed, and they’ll hit crickets or
worms fished around the bed-
ding areas.”

Lakes Concordia,

St. John, Bruin
According to Eddie Roberts,
owner of Eddie’s Marine
and Tackle in Vidalia, the
bass spawn will likely be
somewhat delayed this year
because of the extended
spell of cold weather on into
March.
“The spawn is likely to be
still going on fairly heav-
ily in April because of cold
weather,” Roberts said. “The
best bet is to fish around the
bases of trees in the shallows
with a variety of lures. You
can catch them on anything
from jigs, soft plastics, jerk
baits, Beaver-style baits,
topwaters and square-billed
crankbaits. Best lakes to catch
some good bass this time of
year are Concordia, St. John
and Bruin.
“If you’re interested in
catching some crappie, your
best bet is to head to the
Black River/Horseshoe Lake
Complex near Vidalia. The
crappie will be very shallow
with the spawn going on, and
either shiners or jigs ought to
work well on these fish.” ■
