Proposal could ban surface
drives from Biloxi WMA From News Reports
The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission last
month adopted a notice of intent to raise the minimum
horsepower rating and prohibit surface drive boats on
Biloxi Wildlife Management Area in St. Bernard Parish, the
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.
If approved, the maximum horsepower allowed on the
WMA would move from 16 to 25, according to a press
release.The amendment reads as follows: “Mud boats or air-cooled
propulsion vessels can only be powered by straight shaft
‘long tail’ air-cooled, mud motors that are 25 total horse-
power or less on the WMA. All other types of mud boats
or air-cooled propulsion vessels (including “surface drive”
boats) are prohibited.”
The proposed move is in an effort to reduce marsh damage
and erosion, the LDWF said.
