SWIMBAIT ROD by John Copeman
T
he Ardent D.B Pro Series rods are built on strikingly-rich blue,
IM8 blanks made up from a Hi-Flex graphite core for strength,
encased in a 24 m/n PSI carbon fibre scrim for added power.
A 42m/s PSI graphite is woven over this and finished off with a top
weave of Hi-Flex carbon fabric for additional elasticity. This
construction gives a super strong blank with a fast action and
quick recovery, in a light-weight, modern rod.
The 7’6” Swimbait model is a heavy action casting rod with a
fully exposed blank Pacific Bay reel seat and abbreviated cork grips
for increased sensitivity. Fitted with the new Fuji Guide Concept
System in
Alconite it
incorporates
two triple
legged butt
guides, seven
single leg
intermediates
plus tip.
This aids
castability,
accuracy and
balance. No casting weight range is visible on the rod but it seems
to sit very close to my G.Loomis SWBR 904c, albeit a little faster
actioned. Rated ½ to 3oz, although I tend to not go a great deal
over 70g on mine.
Out on the water the Ardent DB handles swimbaits beautifully,
from the smaller 12.5cm 3D Rattle Trout weighing 35g, through
Spring Dawgs right up to six inch AC Casitas coming in at a
whopping 67g. Although rated as a ‘heavy’ actioned rod, this is in
Large Mouth Bass terms, so it still gives a great deal of pleasure
when catching smaller Jack pike whilst retaining plenty of back
bone for dealing with bigger fish and despite this power it emits
an incredible amount of feel.
I initially matched the rod to a 5601 ABU loaded with 65lb braid
but have also used it paired with a lower profile 301 Shimano
loaded with slightly lighter 40lb braid. In the relatively short time
I have been using this rod I still cannot find a fault with it when
casting and retrieving swimbaits and big rubbers. Any lure
angler looking for a slightly longer rod for throwing these baits
could do a lot worse than having a punt on one of these beautiful
looking rods, retailing at less than £100. Denny Brauer has been a
big name on the US Bass Tournament scene since the mid 1980’s so
would not put his signature on an inferior line of rods. It certainly
